When finished, this project will have added four much needed classrooms and a courtyard for the children to play in. Above is on of these four. The roof is now on, and the exterior walls nearly completed. Notice the "scaffolding" which is really just trees held together by as little as a single nail. There are only six full time workers involved in the building and they scale this scaffolding expertly in bare feet and flip flops carrying tools and materials in feats of gravity defying skill. We have worked side by side with these men, the YMCA team on the foundation and the workers on the roof and walls. An incredible yet natural flow has occurred without language, just a mutual, unspoken understanding and a desire to see these classrooms built.
YMCA International Services and the YMCA of Greater Houston host a project to build or repair elementary school classrooms in rural Vietnam. The construction of the schools is combined with a two week-long service learning opportunity for participants to assist with the construction of the classrooms as they learn about Vietnam's people and places.
